Legal Researcher

The Sanctuary Land Trust Committee requires a Legal Researcher to assist in background research on legal matters related to the purchase of land for nature sanctuary, the maintenance of nature sanctuaries, land trusts, and recent changes in the Ontario Charities Act. This is an ideal position for a young professional with law background wishing to expand their knowledge base, or a seasoned legal professional looking for an opportunity to contribute their knowledge and experience in a way that gives back to the community. Licensed Chainsaw Operator

The HNC oversees the stewardship of 5 nature sanctuaries in the Hamilton area. A licensed Chainsaw Operator is needed to assist with tree trimming and occasional tree removal on sanctuary properties. This is an ideal opportunity for a landscape department or company to give back to the community through the contribution of skilled employees. Event Volunteer

The HNC hosts and attends numerous events each year. Help is needed with: promotion, recruiting and training volunteers, set up and take down, staffing display booths, and securing Silent Auction items.

Financial Planning Specialist

Outdoor Education Volunteer

The Outdoor Education Volunteer is responsible for providing assistance to the Land Trust Coordinator in the development and/or delivery of ecology focused learning programs in local schools

Key tasks include:

  1. Preparing and implementing ecology focused learning programs to be presented to students in local schools
  2. Leading discussion groups and/or lectures on ecology focused topics such as native trees, wildlife and habitats, species at risk, becoming a nature steward

Key skills include:

Experience and/or training in developing ecology based materials an asset; experience and/or training in delivering ecology based materials an asset; comfort with public speaking, and teaching ecology and/or ecology related topics

Commitment: Availability during the day during the school year.

Pollinator Patch Volunteer

Help to maintain recently planted pollinator patches in downtown Hamilton. Training will be provided.

Commitment: 2 to 4 hours September to November and then from April to August (flexible schedule)

Graphic Artist

Prepare graphic art for a variety of purposes including internal volunteer recruitment campaign, website, education and conservation opportunities.

WordPress Web Developer

The HNC is seeking a volunteer WordPress Web Developer to help with Hamilton Naturalists’ Club’s website (http://hamiltonnature.org/) and take it to the next level. The volunteer candidate needs to have basic knowledge with WordPress best practices, front-end/ back-end web development and some experience with PHP/MySQL. Knowledge with JavaScript will be highly beneficial.

We are looking to redesign our current website. Our long term goal is to develop a custom WordPress theme for our current website. If you have previous experience developing WordPress themes and plugins that would be huge advantage.

Experience needed in:

  • A wordpress website
  • HTML/ CSS/ PHP/ MySQL coding
  • Web best practices
  • Building custom WordPress themes

Fundraising Volunteers

Assist with activity-based fundraising, grant-writing and stewarding major gifts.

Social Committee Volunteers (three needed)

The social committee is looking for three volunteers to help with the HNC monthly member meetings.

Duties include:

  • Planning for and setting up refreshments including coffee, tea, juice, snacks
  • Bringing home baked goods is welcome, but not necessary
  • Packing up and taking materials home (such as linens, plates)
  • Making members feel welcome, socializing with members
  • Greeting speakers and ensuring their needs are met

Commitment: One Monday evening a month from December 2015 – May 2016 @ 6:30 pm in the evening at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario.
