Bird Study Group: The Sheelah Dunn Dooley Banding Station

In early 2023, the Hamilton Naturalist Club approved the initiation of a “MAPS” Banding Station on the Sheelah Dunn Dooley (SDD) Nature Sanctuary. MAPS stands for Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship and is a program overseen by the Institute for Bird Populations (IBP). There are approximately 300 MAPS banding stations across North America, as well as many stations in the neotropics, that are gathering data on breeding birds and their young across different habitats and latitudes every year. The HNC MAPS Banding Station is a new addition to the IBP MAPS program. Join Hamilton Naturalist Member, Catherine Manschot as she shares the MAPS protocol, the birds that were captured in the first year of operation, and the kinds of data that are being collected.
